Siddharth University Vocal for Local (SUVOCAL)

The Covid-19 pandemic reshaped consumption patterns, prompting the Indian government to promote self-reliance through the ‘Vocal for Local’ campaign. Siddharth University initiated its own ‘Vocal for Local’ (SUVOCAL) program in 2021 to strengthen the local economy and encourage the use of indigenous products. Located in an aspirational district, the university aims to empower Siddharthnagar and nearby areas by fostering self-sufficiency.

The Context

SUVOCAL has enhanced community bonding in rural areas by engaging local populations in economic and cultural development. The university has adopted ten villages—Piprahwa, Palta Devi, Semari, Gayaghat, Dulha Sumali, Piparsan, Deviapur, Magarahiya, Boharwa, and Ganvaria—to raise awareness and support local entrepreneurship. The initiative focuses on:

  • Preserving local heritage and monuments.
  • Promoting folk art and crafts.
  • Encouraging health, hygiene, and environmental sustainability.
  • Strengthening cultural traditions and literacy.
  • Celebrating regional festivals and social events.

By promoting local products and skills, the campaign fosters a sense of identity and self-reliance while encouraging collaboration between different communities.

The Practice

The Women Study Centre at Siddharth University plays a central role in implementing SUVOCAL by organizing monthly activities in the adopted villages. These efforts aim to improve lifestyles, revive cultural heritage, and promote sustainable practices.
Special emphasis is given to preserving historical monuments associated with Gautama Buddha. The International Buddhist Center at the university has preserved rare Pali manuscripts, making them accessible online for research. Additionally, folk songs performed by village women are documented and shared on social media to promote cultural awareness.
Faculty members visit villages to conduct hygiene awareness campaigns, support local crafts, and distribute educational materials to children. Tribal communities are also engaged to preserve their cultural heritage and traditions. Efforts are being made to increase access to education, particularly for girls, by providing counseling and support.

Evidence of Success

The SUVOCAL initiative has led to increased community participation, particularly among women, who have started producing handicrafts and generating income. Educational opportunities for girls have improved, with more students opting for higher education. Awareness programs and cultural activities have strengthened local identity and economic stability.
Siddharth University’s Vocal for Local initiative has significantly contributed to self-reliance, cultural preservation, and community empowerment. By promoting local products and traditions, SUVOCAL has positively impacted rural economies. However, sustained efforts, resource mobilization, and infrastructural support are needed to expand and enhance its impact further.
